Choosing your Used Car

Chose and find your used car.

The first step in buying a car is to find a vehicle that best suits your wants and needs. Never forget that buying a car is not like buying a house, cars will never appreciate but only depreciate in value. Your vehicle will depreciate faster than you are able to pay it off so make sure the car you're buying is one you plan on hanging on to for at least 3-5 years. Trading out of the vehicle any sooner will put you in a negative equity position.

Buying a used car can prove to be more difficult than buying a new car. Every used car is different; there are no two out there that are identical. When searching for a used car it doesn't always come down to what's the best price on what I want, but what's the closest thing out there to what I want. When looking for a pre-owned vehicle be prepared to sacrifice year, color, miles or equipment in order to find something that meets your financial goals.

Make a list of your "must have" and "like to have" equipment. This is where a lot of buyers tend to struggle. We all want champagne on a beer budget. Make sure you have realistic expectations. Ask yourself what you are willing to settle on and what you are not. Sure, navigation would be a great feature to have, but can I live without it?
The best place to start would be to search for the car using some of the more popular websites such as cars.com or autotrader.com. Most of the reputable dealers in your area will be found on one, or both of these sites. You may also want to check all of your local dealerships for inventory by giving them a call. Your car may be on their lot, but they just haven't listed it online yet.

Be patient, the used car inventory is always changing. If you don't find what you're looking for today, it may show up tomorrow.
